Earning your pilot’s license gives you a level of freedom that few other achievements can match. But once the checkride is over, you face a new challenge: finding a reliable, well-maintained plane to rent without the overhead of ownership. Whether you want to maintain currency or explore the Southeast coast, renting a plane should be straightforward and safe.

At High Tide Aviation, we help you go from passing your checkride to actually flying. With rental bases in Southport, North Carolina and St. Simons Island, Georgia, our Cessna 172 Skyhawks are ready for your next cross-country or weekend flight.

Here is what you need to know about renting a Cessna 172, completing your checkout, and flying with us in 2026.

Why the Cessna 172 is the Ideal Rental Aircraft

When renting an aircraft, you want a stable, predictable platform that handles coastal winds well. The Cessna 172 Skyhawk is the standard trainer and cruiser of general aviation for these reasons. Its high-wing design offers excellent visibility of the shoreline below and provides solid stability, making it comfortable for both you and your passengers.

Our fleet rentals are configured to support a variety of pilot preferences, from classic analog setups to advanced glass panels:

  • Standard Cessna 172 Models ($195/hr wet): These aircraft feature reliable Lycoming O-320 engines (150 to 160 HP) and varying avionics packages. For example, N8409L is equipped with dual Garmin G5 displays and a Garmin GPS 175, while N7085G features a Garmin GNX 375 navigator with WAAS and Bluetooth integration.
  • Technically Advanced Airplane (TAA) ($210/hr wet): For pilots seeking a modern cockpit experience or building hours for advanced certificates, N79475 is a 180 HP Cessna 172K equipped with a Garmin G3X Touch Display, a G5 attitude indicator, a GTN 650 GPS/NAV/COMM, and a Garmin GFC 500 autopilot.

All of our rental rates are wet, meaning the hourly cost includes fuel. This removes the stress of calculating fuel surcharges and ensures you pay exactly for the time you fly. If you are building flight hours toward an advanced rating, we also offer flexible Financing Options to keep your timeline on budget.

Where You Can Rent: Southport, NC & St. Simons Island, GA

We operate our rental fleet out of two prime coastal locations, each offering unique flight planning opportunities and scenic highlights.

Southport, NC: Cape Fear Regional Jetport (KSUT)

Our flagship location in Southport sits close to the Atlantic coast. Taking off from KSUT puts you minutes away from views of the Cape Fear River, Oak Island beaches, and the lighthouse on Bald Head Island. The sea breezes here offer great practice for crosswind management, helping you keep your stick-and-rudder skills sharp.

St. Simons Island, GA: McKinnon St. Simons Airport (KSSI)

Based in Georgia’s Golden Isles, our St. Simons Island location is perfect for pilots looking to explore the southern coast. Earning a rental sign-off here allows you to fly over barrier islands, salt marshes, and sandy beaches. The mild winter climate allows you to rent and fly year-round.

(Note: While we offer flight training at our Wilmington International Airport (KILM) base, solo aircraft rentals are exclusively dispatched from our Southport and St. Simons Island locations.)

The Rental Checkout Process: What to Expect

Before taking one of our Cessna 172s out solo, you must complete a local checkout flight with a High Tide flight instructor. This standard checkout ensures you are familiar with the area and comfortable in the aircraft. If you need to refresh your flight skills beforehand, we can customize a refresher session through our Private Pilot Program or review regulations in our Ground School resources.

Many pilots worry that a checkout is like a checkride, but our instructors keep it straightforward. The checkout flight typically lasts 1 to 1.5 hours and covers:

  1. Local Airspace Familiarization: We will guide you through local traffic patterns, noise abatement procedures, and coastal weather patterns (such as marine layers and sea breezes).
  2. Flight Maneuvers: You will demonstrate basic airwork, including steep turns, slow flight, and stalls, to show positive control of the aircraft.
  3. Takeoffs and Landings: You will practice standard, short-field, and soft-field takeoffs and landings, as well as emergency engine-out procedures in the pattern.

Once you demonstrate proficiency and safety, your instructor will sign off on your rental privileges. If you are planning a specific trip, this checkout is also the perfect time to ask your instructor about local flight planning tips.

Renter’s Insurance and Safety Requirements

To rent from us, you need a valid non-owned aircraft (renter’s) insurance policy. While High Tide Aviation carries hull and liability insurance, renter’s insurance protects you from deductibles or damage claims if an incident occurs.

We partner with Avemco Insurance Company to make obtaining coverage simple. You can secure a quote online before your checkout flight so you are protected the moment you taxi out.

Our in-house maintenance department, staffed by FAA-certified mechanics, works daily to keep our aircraft in top shape. Because we maintain our own fleet, we reduce downtime and keep our planes ready when you book them.

Plan Your Next Flight

Renting a plane should be about the flight itself, not the paperwork. Our wet rental rates, modern panel options, and maintenance support are set up to help you get in the air safely.

If you are ready to book a Cessna 172 rental and schedule your checkout flight, contact us today or call our Southport office at 910-294-5871.
